What to Do When You Don’t Feel Like Studying
Apr 13, 2026
There will be days during exam preparation when you simply don’t feel like studying.
In demanding careers like accounting, tax and finance, where you are balancing work, study and life, these days are not the exception. They are part of the process.
The challenge isn’t avoiding those moments. It is knowing how to respond to them.
Let’s talk about motivation…
Many students believe they should feel motivated all the time. That if the exam matters enough, the drive will always be there. Motivation is inconsistent. It comes and goes.
If you rely on feeling motivated before you start, you will find yourself stuck more often than you would like.
Instead, it’s about learning to take action despite how you feel in a way that still protects your energy and wellbeing.
Small steps…
On low-energy days, the mistake most students make is setting the same expectations they would on a “good” day. Instead, ask yourself:
What is the smallest step I can take right now?
Not three hours of study. Not finishing a full topic.
It might be:
- Reviewing one question
- Reading through notes for 10 minutes
- Testing yourself on flash cards
Starting small reduces pressure and often, once you begin, it becomes easier to continue.
Focus on starting, not finishing
When motivation is low, thinking about everything you need to cover can feel overwhelming.
So shift your focus. You don’t need to solve everything today. You just need to start.
- Ask yourself, what can I do in the next hour to get just 1% more in my exam…
Progress builds from momentum, not perfection.
Create structure, not pressure
Discipline doesn’t mean pushing yourself to exhaustion. It means creating a simple structure that supports you, especially on the days you don’t feel like it.
This could look like:
- A short, focused study block (even 20–30 minutes)
- A clear, realistic task
- A defined finish point
When your plan feels manageable, you are far more likely to follow through.
Be honest about your energy
Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is recognise that you are genuinely drained.
There’s a difference between Avoiding study and needing rest.
If you are exhausted, pushing through often leads to ineffective study and more frustration.
In those moments, stepping away can help you return with more focus and clarity. Rest fuels our productivity and is part of the process.
A final thought
You don’t need to feel ready to begin. You don’t need the perfect mindset or the perfect plan.
You just need to take the next small step.
And on the days when it feels harder than usual, that step matters even more.
