What This Exam Season Might Be Teaching You
Jun 22, 2026
When exam season ends, it can be tempting to move on quickly. Close the books, clear the desk, return to work, catch up on sleep, and try not to think about study and exams again until you have to.
But before the exam season fades away completely into the background, it may be worth asking the question: What has this exam season taught you?
I am not talking about what the exams have taught you technically, but what have they taught you about yourself?
Professional exams test knowledge, application and exam technique. But they also reveal how we respond under pressure. They show us the habits we rely on, the standards we hold ourselves to, and the stories we tell ourselves when things feel difficult.
Exams and study are something that must be managed alongside full-time work, commuting, family responsibilities and everyday life. That combination can be demanding. It can also reveal a lot about who you are as a person.
You may have learned that you are more resilient than you realised. Perhaps you kept going on evenings when you were tired, you were able to reframe any negative thoughts you were having about exams into something that was more helpful for you, you asked for help when you needed it, or you returned to a subject that had knocked your confidence before.
You may also have learned that your current way of studying is not sustainable. Maybe you left too much to the final weeks. Maybe you pushed through exhaustion until your concentration disappeared and were on the verge of burnout. Maybe your study plan looked good on paper but did not reflect the reality of your life.
Reflection is not about criticising yourself. It is about raising your awareness and then taking action.
A useful starting point is: what worked well for me this time with my study and exams?
Was it starting earlier? Practising past papers? Studying with someone else? Taking proper breaks? Blocking time in your diary? Asking for help early on?
Often, we move past what worked because we are so focused on what felt hard. But understanding your strengths matters too.
The next question is: what could have gone better with my study and exams?
This might be perfectionism, comparison, lack of structure, poor sleep, avoiding difficult topics, or trying to study after every ounce of energy had already been used at work. These patterns are common and naming them raises your awareness and then you can take action.
It is also worth asking what exam season taught you about pressure. In our industry, pressure will not disappear after qualification. There will be deadlines, busy seasons, complex decisions and moments when you feel challenged. The aim here is to understand how you operate when stress appears, and what supports you to stay steady.
This is where wellbeing becomes more than a nice idea. It becomes practical. Sleep, physical activity, food, connection and rest are not separate from performance. They affect concentration, memory, confidence and judgement. If this exam season left you completely depleted, it may be a sign that your system needs more support next time.
So, when the books are closed and the exams feels a like a distant memory, take a moment to look back.
- What would you repeat?
- What would you change?
- What do you now know about yourself that you did not know before?
The answers may be just as valuable as the mark you get in the exam.
