The Hidden Risk of AI in Professional Exam Preparation

Professional accountancy students are under pressure to learn large volumes of technical material in a relatively short period of time. So, it is easy to understand the appeal of AI.

A difficult concept can be explained in seconds. A chapter can be summarised instantly. Practice questions can be generated on demand. A study plan can be created in minutes.

Used well, that can be incredibly helpful.

But there is a question I think we need to ask more often:

Is AI helping students learn more effectively, or is it simply making study feel easier?

Those are not the same thing.

Because one of the biggest risks with AI is not necessarily cheating, incorrect information or even overuse.

It is that students can begin to feel confident about material they have never actually had to retrieve, apply or explain for themselves.

AI can create the illusion of competence.

A student can ask AI to explain a difficult topic, generate a polished answer, summarise a chapter or create a study plan.

The output can look excellent.

It can make complete sense when they read it.

And that can create a very dangerous feeling:

“I understand this.”

But understanding something when it is presented to you is very different from being able to retrieve it, apply it and communicate it independently in an exam.

That distinction matters enormously in professional accountancy education.

Feeling familiar is not the same as knowing

One of the patterns I see with professional students is that, when pressure increases, they often gravitate towards study activities that feel productive but demand less cognitive effort.

Rereading.

Highlighting.

Rewriting notes.

Watching explanations rather than attempting questions.

These activities can create familiarity, but familiarity is not the same as mastery.

AI has the potential to amplify this problem.

A student can now generate a perfect summary in seconds.

They can ask for the “ideal” answer before they have properly attempted the question.

They can simplify every difficult topic before they have spent any time wrestling with it.

They can receive instant reassurance that they are on the right track.

It feels efficient.

But efficiency in study is only valuable if learning is actually taking place.

The best exam preparation is not about removing every difficult moment.

Sometimes the difficult moment is where the learning happens.

Productive struggle still matters

Professional exams are difficult for a reason. Students need to recall information without prompts. They need to work through uncertainty. They need to apply knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios. They need to make decisions when they are not 100% sure. And they need to do all of that under time pressure.

That process can feel uncomfortable. But discomfort is not always evidence that something is going wrong. Sometimes it is evidence that the brain is working hard enough to learn.

This is where AI needs to be used carefully.

If a student immediately asks AI for the answer every time they get stuck, they may remove the very struggle that would have helped them learn.

A better use of AI is to support the thinking process without taking it over.

For example, a student could ask:

“Give me one hint, but do not give me the answer.”

Or:

“Ask me questions that will help me work this out myself.”

Or:

“Here is my answer. Tell me where my reasoning is weak.”

The difference is subtle but important.

In one case, AI replaces the student's thinking.

In the other, it strengthens it.

AI can support active learning very well

Used properly, AI can be an excellent study tool.

It can help students:

  • break a difficult concept into simpler language
  • generate questions for active recall
  • quiz themselves on a topic
  • compare two technical concepts
  • identify gaps in their understanding
  • review mistakes
  • organise revision more realistically
  • challenge their reasoning
  • practise explaining concepts clearly

These uses are particularly valuable because they keep the student actively involved.

That aligns with the way I already encourage students to prepare for professional exams: study smarter, practise retrieving information, use past papers strategically, test yourself regularly and focus on learning rather than simply clocking up hours.

AI can support that approach extremely well.

But it should not become a shortcut around it.

There is also a confidence risk

I think this aspect deserves much more attention. Confidence in professional exams does not come from seeing lots of good answers. It comes from proving to yourself that you can produce them. It comes from attempting a difficult question, getting parts of it wrong, correcting your thinking and eventually improving. That process builds evidence.

Evidence that you know more than you did before. Evidence that you can recover when you get stuck. Evidence that you can make decisions independently.

If students begin checking AI before they trust their own answer, they risk building dependence rather than confidence. And that could have implications beyond the exam hall.

The accountants, tax advisers and finance professionals entering the workplace now are going to work alongside AI throughout their careers.

They will need to be able to review its output, challenge it, identify errors and apply their own professional judgement.

So perhaps one of the most important skills students can learn now is not simply how to use AI. It is when not to rely on it. AI can be wrong.

It can produce information that sounds highly convincing but is inaccurate, incomplete or no longer current.

That is particularly significant in subjects such as tax, audit, accounting standards and regulation.

Professional students therefore need to continue treating their syllabus materials, professional-body resources and examiner guidance as their primary sources.

AI can help explain those materials. It can help students interrogate them. It can help turn them into questions.

But students need to develop the habit of checking rather than accepting.

The real question is not whether students should use AI

I do not think telling professional students simply not to use AI is realistic or particularly helpful.

AI is already part of education and it will increasingly be part of professional life.

The more useful conversation is:

Does the way I am using AI require me to think more deeply or does it allow me to avoid thinking?

That is the question students should be asking themselves.

And it is also a question firms, lecturers and professional bodies need to consider.

Perhaps the biggest risk with AI and professional exams is not that students will use it too much. It is that they will become very good at feeling prepared without ever properly testing whether they are.
